¡Jajaja!
Since I was a young boy, soccer was not just a game; it was my life. I grew up playing in my neighborhood, La Alborada, where we formed an unforgettable team with "El Narizón," Willy, Alfredo, Alberto, "El Negro" Martín, Hans, and myself, among others. Those were pure street days back in '76, when the whole La Alborada and Higuereta area was just being urbanized. The landscape was full of vacant lots and dirt patches where we learned how to battle it out. Someone had the idea to set up "La Choza" there, a dive bar that was, in reality, just a hut where the construction workers from the nearby projects would hang out. We, just a bunch of kids, would sneak in there to spend time drinking and smoking. Hahaha!
That street life kept us happy, with no worries at all. But it also took its toll. I remember a lesson I learned the hard way: a team named "Chacarilla" signed up. We all knew they were the "pitucos" (snobs) who lived in Chacarilla del Estanque. When we had to play against them, those bastards beat us. They were worse than hell, but they played as a unit, while we, despite our talent, didn't know how to work as a team. Of course they beat us: the night before, we had been right there, in the hut, drinking and smoking. We were much better, but our lack of discipline cost us the game. That is a reality that persists in professional soccer: the collective, the discipline, and a cool head usually overcome individual talent.
I always saw this sport as a form of art, but also like a game of chess. I remember Mexico '70 perfectly. In '74, during the World Cup in Germany, it wasn't even us who went, but our arch-rivals, the Chileans. For Argentina '78, Peru had a hell of a team, almost everyone in their prime, but I couldn't enjoy it fully: we had just arrived in the U.S., and North Americans have never been interested in soccer (they have their reasons, which I will explain at another time).
What surprised me the most about that World Cup was the outcome: for Argentina to qualify for the next stage, they had to score more than six goals against Peru. And it happened. Back then, Argentina was under a harsh and stubborn dictatorship. I have read that the Argentine government cabinet showed up in the Peruvian team's locker room. That was the first World Cup I remember with that shadow of doubt. The Peruvian players maintained a suspicious silence, and our goalkeeper, "El Loco" Quiroga—whom I consider a great keeper—was nothing but a sieve that day in particular.
Since then, so many incidents have occurred that it is impossible not to suspect that something murky is going on at FIFA. The Qatar World Cup is the perfect example: a small country with no tradition, but with inexhaustible oil wealth. They bought half of the FIFA board to secure the bid. It was a monumental scandal, although, as always, we only found out when it was too late. Many ended up in prison, but the damage was already done.
I could mention a thousand cases: the "Hand of God" in Mexico '86 or how in that same game Maradona scored a legitimate goal, humiliating the entire midfield, the defense, and the English goalkeeper. Back then, we Latin Americans wanted Argentina to win, partly because of the lingering feelings from the Falklands War. One thing has nothing to do with technique, but soccer is also about politics and emotion.
Over time, refereeing became so controversial that VAR was implemented, supposedly to help them. In my opinion, it hasn't served any purpose; in the end, VAR is still managed by people who decide what to show and what to omit. I remember the frustration of the qualifiers for Qatar: Peru played its last game against Uruguay in Montevideo. We were losing 1-0, and with only a few minutes left, Miguel Trauco pushed down the wing and sent a cross that clearly crossed the line into Rochet's goal. But the goalie, not being a fool, reacted as if nothing had happened. The referee didn't award the goal, Peru was effectively eliminated, and Uruguay qualified directly. In that same Qatar World Cup, where Argentina emerged champion, we saw endless questionable decisions: every time someone touched them in the box, they would flop, and a penalty would be called.
I used to watch soccer with blind enthusiasm, but not anymore. I have seen too many irregularities that always favor the same teams. Soccer has suffered the same fate as boxing: it was a sport where the best man won, but it ended up ruined by money. Let's not be naive; there are too many million-dollar interests at play. The business has ended up suffocating the art.
Soccer is no longer the sport of the masses; it is no longer the sport of the poor. It has become a business for the rich. And if you don't believe me, just look at the prices: tickets exceeding $3,500. So, romanticizing the soccer of the past and holding onto that nostalgia for the "juerga" we had as kids just doesn't make sense anymore. The game has changed, and not for the better.
