It Wasn’t About the Money: Redefining My American Dream at 62
Much is said about the “American Dream”—that aspirational concept that is so individual yet so universal. For some, it’s the accumulation of wealth; for others, professional recognition. It’s often summarized by the pursuit of success and material gain.
But after a lifetime of sacrifice, hard work, and adventure documented in my memoir, Our American Story, I realized my dream was woven with far more intimate, and far more valuable, threads. It was never about reaching an unattainable peak, but about building a full and meaningful life.
Here are the three pillars that ultimately defined my American Dream:
Pillar 1: Family—My Greatest Treasure
When my parents decided to leave Peru, they sacrificed everything for us—selling almost all they owned to ensure a better future for their children. That moment set the standard for my life: the pursuit of family happiness must always be the first priority.
Looking back, my greatest treasure, without a doubt, are my four children: Daniel, Isabella, Francesco, and Valentina. Raising them, watching them grow, and seeing them flourish has been the most rewarding adventure of my life. The American Dream, for me, was never about the size of my bank account; it was about the number of people sitting around my table and the love we share.
Pillar 2: Education—The Discipline of Growth
I believe that true success is found in the discipline of continuous learning. Even later in life, driven by a deep yearning for knowledge and personal growth, that yearning led me to the classrooms of Northeastern University.
Graduating from one of the most prestigious universities in the world was an achievement that filled me with immense personal pride. It wasn't just about the diploma; it was about the rigorous process. That experience instilled in me crucial life skills: discipline, perseverance, and the ability to adapt to new challenges.
The true return on the investment of education is not higher pay, but a richer, more resilient mind.
Pillar 3: Adventure—The Perspective of Travel
Finally, my dream was defined by a profound passion for travel. Exploring the world hasn’t just been a hobby, but a vital way of life.
Each trip has been a lesson—an opportunity to expand my mind, understand different cultures, and marvel at the diversity of our planet. From the ancient ruins of Rome to the bustling markets of Marrakech, every destination has left an indelible mark on my soul, enriching my perspective and reminding me of the vastness and beauty of the world we inhabit.
My Dream, Realized
My "American Dream" wasn't a final destination, but a constant journey of growth, love, and discovery. It wasn't about reaching an unattainable peak, but about building a full and meaningful life, founded on the pillars of family, education, and adventure.
I look to the future with the same curiosity and passion that led me to this country.
