El tiempo, la calma y otras fórmulas de la vida/Time, Calm, and Other Life Formulas

Enjoy the trip.

It is fascinating that when you have a lot of things to do, time goes by faster. And when you don't have much to do, time seems—or one perceives it—to go slower. This often happens when you are on your way to work, school, or some meeting and, as life would have it, you leave right on time. Or when you are heading to work and suddenly find out they are fixing the roads or there was an accident. In those moments, you feel time slipping through your fingers. Like when you want to grab water with your bare fingers, and of course, you can't. In other words, time cannot be controlled, or at least how we perceive it cannot.
If we look at it from the perspective of science, physics gives us exact formulas to calculate it depending on the context: in motion, it is understood as distance divided by velocity (t = \frac{d}{v}), and in the physics of energy and work, it is defined as work divided by power (t = \frac{W}{P}).
But for our purpose of calculating everyday time and how we experience it from within, the equation is this:
Time (perceived) = Attention + Purpose / Boredom
In other words, attention plus the purpose of what we do, divided by boredom, equals time. And that explains what happens to our thoughts when we think about time. At the end of the day, we cannot control time, but we can manage it a bit more. And the best way to do that is through calm. That is what allows us to control a little bit of the uncontrollable.
I remember back in 1986, when I had bought my ticket to travel to England for the very first time, and that was a long time ago now. I couldn't wait to go and see that beautiful country, its people, its culture, everything. And finally, the long-awaited day arrived, but afterward, all those eagerly awaited days vanished with startling speed. They were incredible moments that remain engraved in my mind forever.
And well, now we are in the year 2026. And it feels as if no time has passed at all, but the most important thing is to keep calm and return in my mind to those incredible moments. And that is the ability we have: to be able to transport ourselves back to the past. Time is our ally, and we must look at it that way. That is what I have learned.
Enjoy the trip.
