Writing, like anything else in life, should be done because you enjoy it; you shouldn't force anything. But when you're a kid and you start to write or read, it's usually because it's imposed on you. And honestly, I've always been one of those people who, when someone tries to force me to do something, I instinctively push back.
Eran tiempos innegablemente distintos.
The educational system of my time was dictatorial; everything was taught based on fear and force. In many cases, physical punishment was the norm: if we didn't do our homework or didn't pay attention in class, we got hit. It was simply how the world worked. It wasn't just school; bullying was fierce, in the neighborhood fighting was the language to show who had more grit, and at home, discipline usually included a heavy hand. Some of us got it worse than others, but that was life in the 60s and 70s. Those were undeniably different times.
With all those experiences under my belt, when I became a father, I made a non-negotiable decision: I would never hit any of my four children. I decided I would never lay a finger on them. And believe me, we went through some mischief and some real "hija de putada" moments that they put me through, but I held my ground. I did, however, speak firmly so they knew that certain things could not be repeated. I also learned—especially during my career as a boss—that when you need to call someone out, you have to do it at the right moment. If you wait too long, the effectiveness and the lesson are diluted; the learning loses its impact.
Now, in this year 2026, things have changed dramatically. In some ways for the better; in others, I doubt it. Today, teachers cannot touch a student—how lucky they are!—and they are much more careful about how they speak to them. Bullying is severely punished, and rightly so, since we have seen how minors, unable to endure the harassment, have made irreversible decisions about their own lives. Sure, bullying still exists, but if an authority finds out, the consequences are immediate.
However, I feel that we have gone from one extreme to the other. We went from dictatorial rigidity to a sort of extreme permissiveness, where everything is soft, rose-colored.
The real challenge is to find the balance. As in any aspect of existence, the key is equilibrium. Is it difficult? Of course. Is it impossible? Not at all; nothing is impossible. But if we don't reach that middle ground, that zen state, we run the risk of raising a culture of "crybabies" who can't handle anything. And that is where the danger lies: if we don't forge character, we are facing the beginning of our decline as a civilization.
