Hoy es un día especial; me encuentro en Uruguay y este cambio de aires me ha hecho reflexionar sobre algo inquietante: la enorme cantidad de teorías conspirativas que circulan actualmente. No digo que la gente sea tonta; al contrario, personas muy inteligentes están cayendo en estas redes. Creo que se debe, en gran parte, a la frustración que siente la sociedad frente a las instituciones y el poder. Con la desinformación en redes sociales y la creciente falta de criterio crítico, este movimiento está cobrando fuerza y resulta, francamente, aterrador.

Una de las teorías más grandes que ha cobrado fuerza recientemente es el terraplanismo. He visto videos defendiendo esta postura y es impactante. Hace cientos de años, la humanidad ya había deducido que la Tierra era redonda, y mediante la tecnología lo confirmamos hace mucho tiempo. Es increíble que estemos retrocediendo en cuanto al conocimiento científico básico.

Nota sobre la tecnología: Para entender por qué no hay duda, debemos mirar sistemas como el GPS. El posicionamiento global depende de satélites que orbitan una esfera. Si la Tierra fuera plana, los cálculos de latitud y longitud que usamos para navegar simplemente no funcionarían. Además, la geodesia moderna utiliza láseres y satélites para medir la curvatura terrestre con precisión milimétrica.

A veces no sabemos qué creer porque estamos bombardeados por publicidad y algoritmos. El otro día, mientras volaba en un avión comercial, pensé: "El piloto seguramente sabe la verdad". Así que le pregunté, un poco en broma: "Con tanta gente diciendo que la Tierra es plana, ¿usted qué dice, es plana o redonda?". El piloto me miró con una sonrisa y respondió: "La Tierra es definitivamente redonda". Me reí con él y no quise insistir para no sonar ignorante, pero su seguridad fue absoluta.

La otra teoría prevalente es que la humanidad nunca pisó la Luna. Se dice que, debido a la carrera espacial, Estados Unidos utilizó su magnífica industria cinematográfica para fingir las misiones Apolo. Muchos creen hoy que todo fue un montaje de Hollywood.

Sobre las misiones lunares: Si bien han pasado más de 50 años sin un regreso tripulado (debido principalmente a cambios en presupuestos políticos y prioridades estratégicas), hoy contamos con el LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter). Esta sonda ha tomado fotos de alta resolución donde aún se ven los módulos de aterrizaje y las huellas de los astronautas, que permanecen intactas al no haber atmósfera ni viento en la Luna.

Existen tantas conspiraciones apareciendo constantemente que se vuelve difícil distinguir la verdad de la ficción. Me declaro un escéptico de estas teorías, pero me preocupa ver cómo la duda razonable se convierte en un rechazo total a la evidencia científica.

Today is a special day; I am in Uruguay, and this change of scenery has led me to reflect on something unsettling: the vast number of conspiracy theories circulating today. I’m not saying people are stupid; on the contrary, very smart people are falling for these traps. I think it stems, in large part, from the frustration people feel toward "the powers that be." With the spread of misinformation on social media and a growing lack of critical thinking, this movement is gaining momentum, and it’s truly frightening.

One of the biggest theories that has resurfaced in recent years is the Flat Earth movement. I’ve seen series of videos on YouTube highlighting these claims, and it’s shocking. Humans realized the Earth was round centuries ago, and through our technology, we confirmed it a long time ago. It is absolutely incredible that we are regressing in terms of scientific understanding.

Technology Insight: To understand why there is no doubt, we can look at GPS technology. Global positioning depends on a network of satellites orbiting a sphere. If the Earth were flat, the trigonometric calculations required for your phone to locate you on a map simply wouldn’t work. Furthermore, modern geodesy uses lasers and satellite measurements to track the Earth's curvature with millimeter precision.

We often don’t know what to believe because we are constantly bombarded by ads and algorithms on social media. The other day, while flying on a commercial airplane, I thought to myself, "The pilot surely knows if the Earth is round or flat." So, I took a moment to ask, saying somewhat jokingly: "With all the people nowadays thinking that the Earth is flat, is it flat or round?" The pilot looked at me with a smile and said, "The Earth is definitely round." I just laughed along; I didn't want to push it or sound foolish, but his certainty was clear.

Another prevalent conspiracy is that humankind never went to the moon. The claim suggests that because of the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States, the latter used its magnificent cinematography industry to fake the Apollo missions. Many people truly believe it was all staged by Hollywood like a movie.

About the Moon Landings: While it's true we haven't sent humans back in over 50 years (largely due to shifting political budgets and a focus on the International Space Station), we now have the LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter). This probe has captured high-resolution images of the landing sites, showing the lunar modules and astronaut footprints, which remain intact because there is no air or wind on the moon.

There are so many other conspiracies appearing that it’s hard to tell truth from fiction. I am growing skeptical of these particular claims, but it is sad to see how skepticism can sometimes turn into a total rejection of science.
