A Family Tradition

Yesterday, we sat down to watch the Super Bowl—the final showdown between the champions of the AFC and the NFC. This year, it was the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots. To be honest, I didn't really care who won either way, but watching it with my kids is a tradition we always try to keep.

We made some nachos and a bowl of chili that Valentina helped me cook. I have to say, it was pretty good! I know it was a success because if it’s not good, my kids will immediately let me know.

An Unexpected Performance

The other big draw was the halftime show. This year, the headliner was none other than Bad Bunny. Personally, I’ve never been a fan for a variety of reasons, primarily because I don't think he has a very good voice. Initially, I wasn't even planning to watch the show, but we ended up staying for it.

Even though he’s not the greatest singer, I appreciated that he chose to sing in Spanish and selected salsa-inspired tracks, which I truly enjoy. The guest performers were a surprise, too—Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin joined him. Even though Lady Gaga didn't sing in Spanish, her song had a fantastic Latin rhythm. The entire stage setting was amazing; it felt as though they were on a sugar plantation in Puerto Rico. Of course, there were a few digs and subliminal messages against the current administration—we know who they are, and they don’t deserve my time or energy to explain.

The Language of Music

After the performance, I noticed the reactions online. Many Spanish-speaking viewers loved it, and I found myself agreeing with them, despite not being a fan of Bad Bunny’s usual music. On the other hand, many "MAGA" followers complained that they didn’t enjoy it, primarily because they couldn't understand the lyrics.

All I could do was laugh. In my opinion, when it comes to music, you don't need to understand every word to feel it. I know this from experience. I grew up listening to rock and disco without speaking a word of English, yet I loved the songs. As kids, we listened to everything: The Beatles, Chicago, Elvis, Uriah Heep, America, The Eagles, Elton John, The Bee Gees, The Carpenters, and Pink Floyd. I listened because the music was fantastic. I didn't care about the words; I used my imagination, and that was all I needed. It is an absolute shame that today's leaders try to polarize our society using every element possible—including music.

Una tradición familiar

Ayer nos sentamos a ver el Super Bowl, el duelo final entre los campeones de la AFC y la NFC. Este año se enfrentaron los Seattle Seahawks contra los New England Patriots. Para ser honesto, no me importaba quién ganara, pero verlo con mis hijos es una tradición que siempre tratamos de mantener.

Preparamos unos nachos y un tazón de chili que Valentina me ayudó a cocinar. Debo decir que quedó bastante bueno; lo sé porque, si no está rico, mis hijos me lo dicen de inmediato.

Una actuación inesperada

El otro gran atractivo fue el espectáculo de medio tiempo. Este año, el protagonista fue nada menos que Bad Bunny. Personalmente, nunca he sido su fan por diversas razones, principalmente porque no creo que tenga una buena voz. Al principio ni siquiera planeaba ver el show, pero terminamos viéndolo.

Aunque no es el mejor cantante, aprecié que eligiera cantar en español y que seleccionara temas inspirados en la salsa, algo que disfruto mucho. Los artistas invitados también fueron una sorpresa: Lady Gaga y Ricky Martin se unieron a él. Aunque Lady Gaga no cantó en español, su canción tenía un ritmo latino fantástico. La escenografía fue increíble; se sentía como si estuvieran en una plantación de azúcar en Puerto Rico. Por supuesto, hubo algunas críticas y mensajes subliminales contra la administración actual; ya sabemos quiénes son y no merecen mi tiempo ni mi energía para explicarlos.

El lenguaje de la música

Después de la actuación, noté las reacciones en internet. A mucha gente de habla hispana le encantó, y yo estaba de acuerdo, a pesar de no ser fan de su música habitual. Por otro lado, muchos seguidores de "MAGA" se quejaban de que no lo disfrutaron, principalmente porque no entendían lo que cantaba.

Lo único que pude hacer fue reír. En mi opinión, cuando se trata de música, no necesitas entender cada palabra para sentirla. Lo sé por experiencia: crecí escuchando rock y disco sin hablar una palabra de inglés, y aun así me encantaban las canciones. De niños escuchábamos de todo: The Beatles, Chicago, Elvis, Uriah Heep, America, The Eagles, Elton John, The Bee Gees, The Carpenters y Pink Floyd. Escuchaba porque la música era fantástica. No me importaba entender la letra; usaba mi imaginación y eso era todo lo que necesitaba. Es una verdadera lástima que los líderes de hoy intenten polarizar a nuestra sociedad usando cada elemento posible, incluyendo la música.
