Artificial Intelligence is taking over the world, and in the next few years, it feels like people aren't going to have anything left to do. All businesses want is to save money—that’s the name of the game, after all. It’s exactly what happened to the U.S. decades ago when manufacturing jobs started heading to China. Now, the outsourcing is happening again, but this time, it’s not to another country; it’s to software.

Take yesterday, for example. I went through a Wendy’s drive-thru with my mom. When I pulled up to order, I heard that voice we’re all starting to recognize: a cold, synthetic AI. I placed my order, and it worked, I guess. But when I got to the window to pay, I looked at the person working there and just said it: "We’re fucked." I told him that AI is going to take most jobs in the next few years. He understood, but it clearly wasn’t his fault. But let’s think about this a little further—the job of taking orders at a fast-food restaurant is already one of the lowest-paying positions in the economy. If companies are already willing to cut those roles to save a few bucks an hour, no job is safe.

A couple of weeks ago, I called Jiffy Lube for an oil change. When I dialed, there it was again—that same "fucking computer" voice. I asked about an appointment, and the AI told me I didn’t need one. When I asked, "Are you a computer?" it actually lied to me, claiming it was just the way it sounded. When I arrived at the shop, I asked the attendant if I had been talking to a computer, and she confirmed it. I also noticed that the shop felt hollowed out—there were fewer human employees on the floor than there used to be.

We are facing two massive issues here:

1. The Silent Displacement: AI is taking over jobs quickly and quietly. Most people don’t seem to realize the scale of it, and the politicians are staying deathly silent.

2. The Culture of Deception: The people feeding these AI systems are teaching them to lie to customers to make the experience feel "human."

I have to wonder: does the public realize the gravity of this? If we are doing this to fast-food and service jobs, what happens when it hits hospitals or high-level administration? It’s all about the bottom line. Eventually, are the only viable careers going to be computer programming and machine maintenance? If the machines do everything else, what are the next generations actually going to do? We are sleepwalking into a massive shift, and I don't think we're ready for the consequences.

Todo lo que las empresas quieren es ahorrar dinero; ese es el nombre del juego, después de todo. Es exactamente lo que le pasó a Estados Unidos hace muchos años cuando empezaron a llevarse la fabricación a China. Ahora, la subcontratación está ocurriendo de nuevo, pero esta vez no es a otro país, sino al software.

Tomemos como ejemplo lo de ayer. Fui al autoservicio de Wendy’s con mi mamá. Cuando llegué para pedir, escuché esa voz que todos empezamos a reconocer: una IA fría y sintética. Hice mi pedido y funcionó, supongo. Pero cuando llegué a la ventanilla para pagar, miré a la persona que trabajaba allí y se lo dije: "Estamos jodidos". Le dije que la IA se llevará la mayoría de los trabajos en los próximos años. Él lo entendió, pero claramente no era su culpa. Pero pensemos en esto un poco más: el trabajo de tomar pedidos en un restaurante de comida rápida ya es uno de los puestos peor pagados en la economía. Si las empresas ya están dispuestas a recortar esos puestos para ahorrar unos pocos dólares la hora, ningún trabajo está a salvo.

Hace un par de semanas, llamé a Jiffy Lube para un cambio de aceite. Cuando marqué, ahí estaba de nuevo: esa misma voz de "maldita computadora" que todos reconocemos. Pregunté sobre hacer una cita y la IA me dijo que no necesitaba una. Cuando pregunté: "¿Eres una computadora?", realmente me mintió, diciendo que era solo por cómo sonaba. Cuando llegué al establecimiento, le pregunté al empleado si había estado hablando con una computadora y ella lo confirmó. También noté que el lugar se sentía vacío: había menos empleados humanos de los que solía haber.

Estamos enfrentando dos problemas enormes aquí:

1. El Desplazamiento Silencioso: La IA se está apoderando de los trabajos de manera rápida y silenciosa. La mayoría de la gente no parece darse cuenta de la magnitud y los políticos permanecen en un silencio sepulcral.

2. La Cultura del Engaño: Las personas que alimentan estos sistemas de IA les están enseñando a mentir a los clientes para hacer que la experiencia se sienta "humana".

Me pregunto: ¿se dará cuenta el público de la gravedad de esta situación? Si estamos haciendo esto con los trabajos de comida rápida y servicios, ¿qué pasará cuando llegue a los hospitales o a la administración de alto nivel? Todo se trata del margen de beneficio. Al final, ¿serán las únicas carreras viables la programación informática y el mantenimiento de máquinas? Si las máquinas hacen todo lo demás, ¿qué harán las próximas generaciones? Estamos caminando dormidos hacia un cambio masivo, y no creo que estemos preparados para las consecuencias.
